Boomer Sooner. Sixteen of Bob Stoops’ Oklahoma players fill up Athlon’s All-Big 12 selections, four more than any other school, and a newcomer is crashing the top quarterback slot.
However, just one OU defender made the First Team, that being safety Tony Jefferson. And, think about this: Iowa State has more top-ballot defenders than OU. Texas, which I’ve gone on record as saying will have a monster defensive unit this season, has five selections. (In other words, Mack Brown has no excuses this season, quarterback issues or not.) The Sooners are far from left out, though, as OU has five defensive second-team picks. In other words, yeah, there isn’t a drop-off, if that’s what other teams were hoping for.
In all, nine of the 10 schools had at least one selection on the first team (Kansas the lone exception).
Kansas State fared solidly, placing seven selections among three teams. Arthur Brown (LB) and Tyler Lockett (KR) garnered first-team honors, while quarterback Collin Klein, who is among early Heisman talk after a phenomenal junior season, was rated second-team QB behind West Virginia’s Geno Smith.
