Jason Kendall’s comeback lasted two days. Make your own joke about his walking Crash Davis-like into the Northwest Arkansas Naturals clubhouse and laying eyes on Mike Montgomery.
- Montgomery’s line from Tuesday night: 5.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 10.13 ERA.
- In discussing what the left-hander’s troubles have stemmed from since his AA demotion, I heard former Kansas City Royal Mike Boddicker say it is a slap in the face to be demoted.
- I agree, but demotions at that level are earned just like promotions.
- When a lot or all of the discussion surrounding you has been about your mental makeup, rolling out a 1-2, 7.13 ERA, 7 BB, 11 SO in 17.2 IP since being dropped down isn’t going to change any minds.
- In other words, if the kid has it in him, he needs to turn it around in a hurry because the administration that drafted him is under enough pressure already, meaning it doesn’t have the time or patience to let him throw any tantrums.
- Boiled down: accountability.
- Since Ned Yost dropped Eric Hosmer out of the third spot in the batting order, Hosmer has gone on a five-game hitting streak, hitting .421 (8/19) in that stretch with two doubles.
- It doesn’t make up for things like zero home runs in July and only four dingers in his last 302 at-bats, but while this season has been humbling without question…
- Baby steps.
- And, here’s hoping the Royals finally quit grasping at every inch of a guy’s success and try to blow it out of proportion. Let him finish the year in a spot where he can comfortably grow.
- While he certainly sounded more humble in his approach, is it possible that KU head coach Charlie Weis just learned how to disarm a crowd a little better? (And, that’s not a bad thing…)
- I mean does anybody really think a coach who just signed a large deal in a situation that wants to paint him as a savior somehow unlearned a massive ego?
- As for more paraphrasing from the coaches who took part in the second and final day of Big 12 Football Media Days in Dallas.
- West Virginia’s Dana Holgerson: Yep, with new wrinkles and a lot of offensive experience, we’re gonna run the Jimmy John. Gonna be freaky fast, like my hair.
- Texas’ Mack Brown: Yes, our defensive is gonna be good. No, I wasn’t able to find a better quarterback than the two we ran out last year. But, they are a year older, so there’s that.
- Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy: Why can’t any of you realize that Oklahoma State is now a program? I’ve had assistants in and out of here, major talent graduate, and we still win. Gonna do it again this year.
- KU’s Weis: The Jayhawks got me. The Jayhawks got Dayne Crist. What else do they need?
- Baylor’s Art Briles: He’s gone, isn’t he? Robert Griffin really is gone. I think I’m gonna go sit quietly in my new stadium and think about that for awhile, right up until the first conference game.
- And, now you’re ready for football season.
- As for the NFL guys…
- In this world of more information available to more people, what is it that Dwayne Bowe’s agent, Todd France, thinks he’s hiding from fans, or more importantly, the Kansas City Chiefs?
- There is nothing to be gained by your client by his missing camp, and your credibility isn’t all that great in KC world considering Branden Albert fired you a few months ago.
- Your only goal: get Bowe to camp on time. The end.
