Hochevar; and…what? Mizzou is SEC-bound?

by

Today, Sam Mellinger from the Kansas City Star ponders what the Kansas City Royals should, can and won’t do with Luke Hochevar. All I ask from the team is to make sure they give me plenty of advance notice on his home starts so that I make sure to pick another day to go. Most of you know why, but let’s ask the question anyways…

- Who in the hell dressed up Kyle Davies’ career numbers in a Hochevar uniform?

- I threw this on Twitter awhile ago, but here’s the latest comparison: Davies – 144 games started, 43-65, 5.59 ERA, three complete games, 768 innings pitched, 876 hits allowed. Hochevar – 102 games started, 32-46, 5.46 ERA, three complete games, 613.2 innings pitched, 662 hits allowed.

- “Little Hiram” would only have to go 11-19 and give up about what he has been in order to match his protégé.

- Do the Royals stick with him long enough to give him that shot?

- Wonder if Billy Butler would like to have Zack Greinke instead?

- What kind of prize would a David Lough/Johnny Giavotella/Mike Montgomery package fetch?

- If a deal was made for those pieces, especially for a legitimate starting pitcher, would the big league club or fans even really feel it?

- Are you like me in having to remember the Royals are an ugly 9-18?

- I know I’m still wondering if the Kansas City Chiefs made a mistake with their NFL Draft first-round selection of Dontari Poe.

- I wonder, too, why it seems like every year I step back, look at the big board and marvel at the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots.

- Every pick for those teams doesn’t always pan out, but those organizations always feel like draft-day winners.

- The biggest winner, or at least the zombie-award winner for an unbelievable ability to keep coming back – Bryce Brown, who was a seventh-round selection by the Philadelphia Eagles.

- That 19-year-in-a-row streak for Kansas State to have someone selected feels dirty now – like an Aggieville bathroom at closing time. You’ll use it, but not proudly.

- It’s easier today than it has been in years to say you’re a Big 12 fan.

- Maybe that’s just because you know the conference is going to be around awhile.

- Remember when one of the 65225322642 hot rumors was the Big East was prepared to offer KU, K-State, Missouri and Iowa State?

- And that John Marinatto appeared ready to lead the Big East through some tough times?

- Oops.

- With Bob Bowlsby’s appointment from Stanford, the sneaking, snarky, quiet voice in the back of my mind wonders if this is all just part of Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott’s grand scheme.

- Conspiracy theories, regardless of size or unlikelihood, are awesome.

- Just in case you hadn’t heard or noticed, Missouri is now in the SEC… they have the billboards to prove it.

- No word if the next piece to that deep south marketing campaign is to go the way of those roadside blinking arrow signs.
