The Big 12 Football Preseason Poll is out. Let the second-guessing begin, though it isn’t necessarily at the top.
- Seems most immediate attention is focused on two areas — at No. 2, West Virginia’s respect is noted; as is K-State’s perceived lack thereof at No. 6.
- I don’t have any issue with either team’s slot.
- In fact, I picked WVU to finish a tie-breaker loss third behind Oklahoma State, and had KSU at sixth in my predictions.
- That’s with K-State finishing the year at 8-4, which is going to be tough enough in its own right.
- Yes, SEC, we know… you’re good. But, the Big 12′s NUMBER 6 TEAM, a PRESEASON TOP 25, could go 8-4.
- I’m better now. Moving on…
- Thought it was pretty interesting that Bob Stoops was the reason Joe Gordon wound up at Mississippi College.
- I know fans’ loyalties to their own teams trump real-life relationships, so some K-State folks still harbor major grudges against Stoops, but in the grand scheme of things, he made a reference for one of his former players so that the guy had a chance to pursue his coaching dream.
- It was sort of a dream to see the Kansas City Royals celebrate a walk-off home run instead of giving it up last night.
- Even if it came after the nightmare of seeing a gigantic, late-inning lead disappear faster than a fat kid’s summer-time ice cream cone.
- The fact that it was Billy Butler…and that it ended a mini-swoon…
- Did that make Billy the Royals’ slumpbuster?
- Just sayin’.
- Billy, for a variety of reasons, has commanded the headlines over the past few weeks, but Alex Gordon’s June and July have been phenomenal.
- At least Dayton Moore can put that contract decision in his plus column.
- While reading a Bruce Weber quote from Kansas State’s summer basketball practice, it reiterated an earlier thought that it really might be a perfect setup of sorts for coach and team this season.
- “Coach Martin and his staff got them to play hard and compete hard,” Weber said. “That’s what we’re trying to continue. Now, also, the heart is there, the intensity is there. We have to think a little bit—let’s keep our poise and composure, along with doing our skill work. That’s important, too.”
- If Martin taught effort, and Weber can add effective form to it, it may change some expectations pretty quickly to “Sweet 16 and see what happens.”
- If that scenario works and KSU’s season takes off, I may take to calling it “The Meber Phenomenon.”
