Sporting KC has flash; Chiefs have cash

by

A nod to the fans at cyclonefanatic.com who have spent a considerable amount of time the past few days viewing and discussing my 2012 Big 12 football predictions.

- I’m with you, guys. I think your team has legitimate potential to be an even bigger stick in the eye of several Big 12 teams that, on paper, should beat Iowa State.

- Potential is one thing, however. Just ask the Kansas City Royals.

- Supposedly, the pieces are all in place offensively for the offense-challenged Royals now that Salvador Perez, Lorenzo Cain and Chris Getz are back from injury.

- Two questions: 1) How does the return of three other players suddenly fix or account for Jeff Francoeur’s and Eric Hosmer’s seasons? (It doesn’t.) 2) If the pieces are settling into place, what in the world was the snap decision from manager Ned Yost to slide Cain to the fourth spot in the lineup for Sunday’s game?

- Any lineup open enough that getting a couple of hits earns automatic placement as cleanup doesn’t sound put-together to me.

- And, bonus thought: Perez and his .373/.383/.644 (1.027 OPS) can’t smash his way out of the 8-spot, but Cain’s one-game, two-singles-and-a-double flurry on Friday night earned him the four.

- Consistency, ha, you harlot, take your floozy ways and leave this straight-and-narrow KC clubhouse. And, take your heathen friend, Success, with you.

- Take yourselves right over to LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, where Sporting KC is back on top of the MLS Eastern Conference standings with 36 points — three points ahead of D.C. United.

- Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, defender Aurelien Collin and midfielder Graham Zusi are all-stars, and the team is coming off a 2-0 win on the road at Columbus over the weekend.

- After a road game at Houston on Wednesday, SKC will be at home Saturday night against New England.

- Kansas City sports July swoon, what?

- The Kansas City Chiefs are in an interesting position. Despite being ranked 21st in Pro Football Talk’s power rankings, most experts agree that this is the most roster depth the Chiefs have had in a long time.

- On the other hand, the Chiefs are also fourth in salary cap space.

- So, how much of a buyer are you in about a month if you’re Scott Pioli?

- Try not to let your imagination run wild with that one… especially as players become available toward the end of training camps as they always do.

- On the whole, rightfully make all the jokes you want about candy wrappers and drawn window shades, but the Chiefs appear to be in pretty darn good shape as far as roster management goes.

- (I reserve the right to rescind that previous statement upon an 0-3 start.)
